KOTA KINABALU – Sabah has not set a timeline as to when the state will adopt the anti-party hopping law to curb lawmakers from jumping parties.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said he is not delaying the adoption of the federal law, but wanted the state cabinet to approve it first before tabling it in the state legislature.
“We will make a decision, I will bring the matter to the state cabinet first to decide when the law would be tabled in the state assembly.
“Be patient. We will know (whether the law would be adopted) when the assembly convenes.
“It is not delayed. But it is up to the cabinet to decide. At this point, we have not decided anything yet. So be patient.
“God willing, we will bring this law to the assembly,” he told reporters after the launching of his party Gagasan Rakyat here today.
Sabah Muda and Warisan have been urging the state government to expedite the adoption of the anti-party hopping law after eight lawmakers from Warisan and Umno left their party to join Gagasan Rakyat.
Sabah was supposed to adopt the anti-hopping law in November last year but postponed the move.
Neighbouring state, Sarawak, approved an amendment to its state constitution to prohibit its members from changing political parties mid-term on November 22. – The Vibes, March 2, 2023
